A few recent posts I have read are about favorite things so here are a few of mine…

Unfortunately, none of them are calorie free so I started logging in my calories on http://www.myfitnesspal.com.  So, my fitness pal is my new favorite thing.  In the beginning I didn’t think it was my pal at all.  My weight didn’t move and I was frustrated.  I know my weight didn’t move because I weigh myself like 8 times a day (not advised).  Finally, the scale started moving and I am seeing results so my fitness pal redeemed itself.  It is an easy, free way to keep track of your foods and your goals.  You can earn more calories by working out as well.  I am officially down 11 pounds.

I didn’t lose the weight just using the fitness pal I have been doing hour long cardio sessions everyday for the past few months.  I am not proud to say when I started I could barely run 1 mile without feeling like I was going to die.  I gradually worked my way up to 3, but thought that I had maxed out and that 3 was my limit.  I can now run 6 miles straight without dying!  I think that may be more amazing than losing the weight.

In the process we burned out our old treadmill and had to purchase a new one.  Not really what I wanted to buy, but I can’t run outside.  It killed me.  I need a TV in front of me in order to run, preferably a TV with Ellen on it.  So, a treadmill with a TV hanging above it is a favorite thing as well.

I also rejoined the Y so I can rotate elliptical and treadmill.  I get on the elliptical and text whoever will text with me to make the time go by faster.  My last favorite thing…the people I text with at the gym!

I decided to use a bunch of scrap fabric to make crayon rolls for my daughter’s classes for Valentines Day.  They are quick and easy to make.  They can be used for lots of different occasions…birthday party favors, stocking stuffers, Valentines, Easter basket gift, etc.  They are great to keep in your purse to bring to restaurants or any other place your child may need to be entertained.

Materials Needed
– scrap fabric (I usually use two different fabrics, one for the outside and one for the pocket)
– 20 inches of grosgrain ribbon
– coordinating thread
– needles
– ruler
– rotary cutter (optional)
– chalk pencil or disapprearing ink pen

1) Cut two pieces of fabric with rotary cutter (or scissors) 9″ x 7″ (9″ being your width, 7″ being your height).  This will be the outside of your crayon roll.  Cut one piece of fabric 4.5″ x 9″.  This will be your pocket.  Cut one 20″ piece of grosgrain ribbon.
2) Fold your pocket piece in half (this will make it now 2.25″ x 9″) and iron.  Pin your pocket piece to the right side of one side of your outside piece.  Measure 2.5 inches from the bottom of your pocket and attach grosgrain ribbon.  It should be just a touch over your pocket.

3) Baste pocket and ribbon in place.

4) With right sides together, place front and and back of the crayon roll on top of each other.  Pin.

5) Using a 1/2″ seam, sew around the entire crayon roll, leaving a 2″ opening at the bottom for turning.  Be careful not to sew your ribbon into your seam.

6) Clip corners.

7) Turn the crayon roll right side out and iron.

8 ) Measure 2″ from the top your crayon roll and make a line using your chalk pencil or your invisible ink pen.  This will eventually be your top flap.

9) Using your sewing machine, sew over the line you just made on the fabric (backstitch to secure the stitch).

10) Now it is time to make the pockets for the crayons…each crayon has a one inch pocket.  I think the easiest way to do this is to lay it on your rotary cutting mat and line it up.  Then use your chalk pencil or disappearing ink pen to mark the pockets.

11) Sew over your lines (backstitch to secure the stitch).

12) I now cut the ribbon at an angle and burn the ends to prevent it from fraying.

13) Insert crayons, fold down flap, roll and tie.

Here are all the rolls I made for Valentine’s Day.  I plan on making cute tags to hang from the ribbon.
